Serious about sustainability

The School´s mission expresses that Economical, Social and Ecological Sustainability, is crucial for the School. Sustainability considerations revolve around a variety of areas, such as ecology, responsible management, ethics, poverty alleviation, equal treatment and nondiscrimination. The School’s ambition is to actively implement the commitments under the United Nations Global Compact and the Principles for Responsible Management Education and fill this with content. This awareness translates into action in research, education, cooperation with society and business as well as concrete campus and student initiatives.

The School’s management team is intensifying the efforts within sustainability on a strategic level. One of the missions is that all students should have a thorough understanding of the importance of sustainability considerations when graduating. Another one is to, even more than today, encourage and support collaboration between the departments, the University and with Chalmers University of Technology for a more holistic approach.

Purpose and responsibility

As an academic institution, the School’s purpose is to contribute to the advancement of the global society at large. In this context it is important to focus on contemporary societal development and future challenges facing the world today, whether it is environmental degradation, the energy supply, global poverty, the stress on the public budget of an ageing population, or the vulnerability of political and financial systems. This underlines a responsibility, both collectively and individually, that should be taken into account in all the School’s activities.

In order to prepare the students to be responsible leaders the School’s ambition is to incorporate sustainability as integral part of all programmes. The School has performed research and offered courses within sustainability and CSR for decades.

For all levels of teaching and research, vital contacts have been made with the business community. An example is the Assar Gabrielsson visiting professorship in applied corporate management, currently currently held by Göran Carstedt. Göran is a respected businessman with extensive experience in senior managerial positions in multinational and international organisations such as Volvo, IKEA, the Clinton Climate Initiative and The Society for Organizational Learning at MIT.

The fact that the School has a variety of disciplines is a major advantage in the work with sustainable development. The School’s affiliation with the University and its close proximity to Chalmers increases the possibilities to contribute to the solution of complex problems.
