The Winter Universiade is one of the world’s largest multisport competitions and has since 1959 been arranged every other year. It is also called student Olympics because of the participants’ combination of high-level sports with university studies.
Out of the 52 competitors that Sweden are sending, two are students at the School of Business, Economics and Law, André Grönros in icehockey and Josefin Taljegård in figure skating. Both André and Josefin studies at the Bachelor´s programme in Business and Economics.
We got in contact with André before his departure to Kazakhstan and he believes that the combination university studies and high-level sports is manageable.
-sports has always been an everyday life for me since early years when I started training almost every day. In preparation for this trip, I have tried to study in advance but I also trust that my classmates keeps me updated and informed.
The Winter Universiade 2017 is located in Almaty, Kazakhstan and there are over 2500 competitors from 55 different countries. It is also live streamed in over 80 countries with an expectancy of more than 1 billion viewers.
-What I´m looking forward to the most is the trip itself. Seen that Kazakhstan has invested huge amount of money on arenas, infrastructure and quality of the event. It is never wrong to pull that Sweden jersey on either, André adds at the end.
