Executive Seminar: Applying Social Network Theory

"It's not what you know but who you know and more importantly who they know"

What are the effects of social networks on market participants? Joanne Horton, Visiting Professor, will outline the different types of networks and how these impact on innovation and trust within business. For example networks created via board of directors, analysts and auditors – as well as golf club memberships.

Joanne Horton is Professor of Accounting at the University of Exeter and formerly an Associate Professor at the London School of Economics. She is currently one of our Visiting Professors at the School of Business, Economics and Law.

In her research, she is specifically fascinated by the potential impact of networks on corporate governance mechanisms (e.g. independent directors, auditors etc.) and the transmission of information between market participants such as analysts, executives, fund managers and shareholders. A number of her recent publications and working papers have investigated the impact of networks on executive pay, auditor performance and analysts' forecasting abilities.
