What does "alumnus" mean?
An alumnus is someone who has graduated from a university. The word comes from Latin "alumnus" which meant an apprentice or protégé. Its origin is the Latin "alere" meaning to nourish, bring up, or foster. The Swedish language has contained the word since 1935. We sometimes use English "alumni" in Swedish as well, but it is actually the Latin¿s masculine plural form. The Swedish Academy recommends gender-neutral forms such as "alumn, alumnen, alumner" - which are also prescribed by University of Gothenburg.

Why does the School of Business, Economics and Law have an alumni organisation?
The School of  Business, Economics and Law wants to know what previous students are working with, to develop programs, courses and assignment courses through the alumni´s experiences from professional life, and to improve the working-life contacts that can lead to practice positions, degree theses or research collaborations. In return, the alumni obtain access to University of Gothenburg's alumni database, which facilitates their contacts with each other and with the university. They also receive information about education, research, and competence development by subscribing to the newsletters and magazine, as well as being invited to events such as alumni meetings and lectures.

Many universities and colleges have some form of alumni organisation in order to create and strengthen relations with their previous students for mutual exchange. The alumni are seen as important ambassadors for the institution and its continued development. Moreover, the alumni organisation is regarded as an important part of the universities¿ cooperative task.

Why can´t I find all the details about my friends from university?
The University of Gothenburg alumni database contains information about former students who have graduated from the University. This information has been transferred from student records. In order for you to find more details than name and degree, the person you are looking for must have registered in the database. It is also possible that this particular individual has chosen not to make all details available to other alumni. The less searchable information that is available, the more difficult it will be to find a certain person.

Why can´t I input my postcode?
The system is set to take the standard Swedish five-digit postcode. Please make sure you choose the correct country in the scroll-down menu before you change the postcode. This will change the setting and make it possible to change the postcode. If it still does not work, or if your details are not saved properly when they are updated, please contact the administrator of the alumni database.
